WINDER - About 100 people left Barrow County's Board of Commissioners meeting Tuesday and took shelter after a resident spotted a funnel cloud near Holsenbeck Elementary School.
Anyone interested in extreme weather can learn how to spot and report dangerous conditions in a free three-hour class Tuesday. The National Weather Service Skywarn Storm Spotter class is hosted by the Barrow County Community Response Team and Barrow Amateur Radio Services Club. It is open to public safety personnel, CERT members, amateur radio operators and the general public. The Skywarn Spotter program is a nationwide network of volunteers trained how to identify and report significant weather. Those volunteers are the eyes and ears of the National Weather Service, according to a press release. "Every citizen that volunteers in this or other disaster-preparedness programs helps to make this county better prepared to handle a disaster," said Jimmy Terrell, Barrow County Emergency Management Agency director.
