Jury wants death penalty for killing pregnant woman
KANSAS CITY, Mo.- A federal jury decided Friday that a woman convicted of killing an expectant mother and cutting her baby from her womb should receive the death penalty. Jurors deliberated more than five hours before recommending the sentence for Lisa Montgomery. Judge Gary Fenner will sentence Montgomery, but he had told jurors he was obligated to abide by their recommendation. A sentencing date has not been set. Montgomery, 39, was convicted Monday of kidnapping and killing Bobbie Jo Stinnett on Dec. 16, 2004, in the victim's home in the northwest Missouri town of Skidmore. She was arrested the next day in Melvern, Kan., where she was showing off the newborn as her own. Explosives are thrown at Mexican Consulate in NYC NEW YORK - Two improvised explosives were thrown into the rear of the Mexican Consulate early Friday, causing small explosions that blew out some windows. Woman gets life in prison for role in police slayings COLUMBIA, S.C. - A 75-year-old woman who had known her family planned to shoot anyone who came on their land was convicted and sentenced to life in prison Friday for her role in the deaths of two law officers. Rita Bixby was found guilty of conspiracy and two counts of accessory to murder in the Dec. 8, 2003, shootings.
