Older man quietly strikes Suwanee bank
Police: Heists in city increasing

SUWANEE - Suwanee police are hunting a bank robber they said looks more like an uncle figure than a dangerous criminal.

Police released surveillance images Wednesday from the SunTrust Bank at 3287 Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road that show an older man demanding money.

Police said he walked into the branch about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday and quietly passed a teller a note demanding money.

The man showed the bank employee a handgun on his hip, then left on foot, said Suwanee police spokesman Capt. Clyde Byers. The robber is described as a white man, between 50 and 60 years old, and about 5 feet 9 inches tall.

No injures were reported in the heist.

"(The note) just basically said give me (the money), then be quick and don't alert anybody," Byers said. "He just hung out nonchalant. Other customers didn't realize anything was going on."

A SunTrust manager said he was not able to discuss the matter Wednesday afternoon. Police were unsure how much money the man fled with.

"Usually, they don't get that much," Byers said. "People think you do, but you don't."

Byers said the incident adds to a handful of bank robberies within city limits this year. Bank robberies are a growing problem for Suwanee, triggered by the city's growing population and numerous getaway routes on each side of town, police say.

Records show the Lawrenceville-Suwanee corridor is becoming a particular hot spot for violent crime.

Most recently, a man robbed the Gwinnett Community Bank at 3463 Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road in July. A suspect was later caught in Colorado Springs, Colo., Byers said.

A BB&T bank along the same stretch of Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road was robbed in June. A 36-year-old Suwanee man was arrested and charged in that heist.

In March this year, police nabbed two Decatur residents on charges of robbing the RBC Centura Bank at 3151 Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road.

Byers hopes the surveillance images released Wednesday will help net a similar result.

"The good news is, we did get a pretty good photo," he said. "We're hoping that will put us on him."

Anyone with any information about the robber is asked to call the Suwanee Police Department at 770-945-8995.
