WINDER - Barrow County School Superintendent Ron Saunders was honored with the 2007 Outstanding Service in Community Relations Award.
The award was given last week at Callaway Gardens by the Georgia School Public Relations Association. Saunders, an educator for 37 years, was acknowledged for his work with Barrow County Schools Mentoring Program. For the past nine years, Saunders has spent one hour each week working one on one with a student. Under his leadership, the Barrow County School system grew to a ranking of 4th in the nation for the National Tech Survey. In May, the school system earned an exemplary rating from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Both the Georgia School Board Association and the National School Board Association recognized the Barrow County School Board as a Board of Distinction during his term, according to a press release. Saunders' motto is, "If it's not good for the students, it's just not good and we're not going there." He was recently nominated as one of four finalists for the Georgia School Board Association Superintendent of the Year and was named Administrator of the Year by the Society of School Librarians International, The Extra Mile Award by the Brotherhood Club and the Community Service Award from the Barrow County Chamber of Commerce.More like this story
