Kmart offers flu shots

n LAWRENCEVILLE - Kmart pharmacies will host a series of walk-in flu shot clinics now through November.

Customers can call 1-800-822-8345 to find the date and time of a flu clinic at a nearby Kmart pharmacy.

The cost for flu shot vaccines is $28, and pneumonia shots are also available for $50.

Medical center named one of best

n GAINESVILLE - Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville has been rated No. 1 in Georgia and in the top 5 percent in the nation for overall cardiac care, cardiology services and cardiac surgery by the Hospital Quality in America Study, released by HealthGrades.

HealthGrades is an independent health-care ratings company. This is the third year in a row the medical center has been rated No. 1 in the state for overall cardiac care.

LifeSouth to hold haunted blood drive

n GAINESVILLE - Join LifeSouth for its annual haunted blood drive as the group strives to quell area blood shortages.

The drive will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at LifeSouth's Northeast Georgia Donor Center, 1200 McEver Road Extension in Gainesville.

Donors will receive a recognition item and free cholesterol screening, and will be entered to win a free dinner at Chili's restaurant.

Donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh 110 pound or more and show photo ID at donation time.

Hospice in need of volunteers

n BUFORD - Heartland Hospice in Buford is looking for volunteers for a number of upcoming projects.

The hospice needs volunteers to sit with patients to keep them company, read or help them write letters, or to give the care giver a break. Patients in need of help live in nursing homes, assisted living facilities or their own homes. Training is provided.

An administrative and special projects volunteers is also need for the Buford office. Duties would include filing, preparing admission packets and other office tasks.

A volunteer with skills such as knitting, crocheting, quilting, baking or scrapbooking is also needed, and the hospice is also seeking singers and musicians to form a choir to sing to patients.
