Prep Roundup: GAC downs LaFayette 2-1 to advance to Elite Eight in Columbus

ROME - Jessica Coan struck out 16 batters and gave up one hit as GAC took a 2-1 win over LaFayette on Saturday to advance to state.

Chaney Means was 3-for-4 and Mollie Mitchell was 2-for-2 with an RBI. Madeline Baker scored a run on a squeeze bunt in the first inning and Regan Page was 1-for-3 with a run. Kelsey McDavid finished the night 1-for-3. The Spartans are 35-1-1 and are scheduled to play 2 p.m. Thursday in Columbus.

SOFTBALL

Buford 5, Calhoun 3

ROME - Melissa Higginbotham (16-3) pitched a complete game and struck out four batters, gave up eight hits and two walks to help the Wolves take a 5-3 victory over Calhoun at the sectionals on Saturday to advance to next week's state Elite Eight.

At the plate Higginbotham was 3-for-4 with two doubles and two walks. Alysha Rudnik was 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Ashley Razey was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Chelsie Thomas was 3-for-4 with a double and a run for the night.

Buford (29-6-1) swept through the sectionals at Rome and will head to Columbus next week.

Season ends for Providence

ROME - Providence defeated Montecello 13-3 on Friday night but fell to Gordon Lee 3-0 and lost to Trion 3-2 on Saturday at the state sectionals, ending the Stars' season.

Kylie Kleinschmidt was the losing pitcher in both games on Saturday. Kleinschmidt struck out a total of 19 batters in 121⁄3 innings. Providence gave up a bases-loaded walk in the seventh against Trion.

Kleinschmidt, Brittany Ellington, Caitlin McDowell, Courtney Frazier, Kendal White and Rachel Reiswig each totaled three hits over the weekend. Providence finishes its season 20-14-3.

LaFayette 3, Wesleyan 2

ROME - Wesleyan fell to LaFayette 3-2 after battling back through the loser's bracket and ended the season 15-19 on Saturday.

Megan Coole was 2-for-3 with a run, and Whitney Warren was 2-for-3 with a run for Wesleyan.

Wesleyan beat Pace Academy 9-1 in the Wolves' first game in Saturday sectional play. Paige Hamlin gave up one hit and got the win. Jessica Huff was 2-for-4 with two runs and Erin Hall had two runs and a home run.

In the second game on Saturday, Wesleyan defeated Union County 8-6. Hamlin was the winning pitcher and at the plate was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Warren was 2-for-3 with a run and Brittany Mitchell was 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

On Friday Wesleyan beat North Oconee 3-2 and lost to Calhoun 5-2.

Apalachee advances to state for the first time in history

GAINESVILLE - Friday night Apalachee fell to Sandy Creek 1-0 in eight innings, but the Wildcats won all four games on Saturday to advance to Columbus for the first time in school history.

Apalachee beat Chamblee 10-3, and shutout West Hall (10-0) and Cass (8-0) and defeated Lumpkin County (6-3) on Saturday. Courtney Gunby pitched seven innings and struck out 10 batters against Lumpkin County. Kimmie Bunten had a home run and two hits and Mendy Henson had a two run double and a run.

Shawnee Patterson, Rian Green, Hayley Adkins and Ansley Thompson each scored a run. Apalachee improves to 26-9 overall.
