Cop stops robbery at bank

SUWANEE - An armed robbery at a Bank of America ATM was thwarted Saturday night when a Gwinnett County police officer shot the alleged gunman in the arm.

Abdul Shaheed El-Amin, 31, of Decatur is being held without bond in the Gwinnett County jail on an armed robbery charge, said Cpl. Illana Spellman, the Police Department's spokeswoman.

The Gwinnett County Robbery Task Force was conducting surveillance at about 9:30 p.m. Saturday at the bank at 2800 Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road when a gunman approached a vehicle that had been driven up to the automated teller machine, Spellman said. After the gunman pointed his weapon at the man and woman inside the vehicle, an officer intervened, Spellman said.

When the gunman ran into the wooded area behind the bank, police called in a K-9 unit, Spellman said. A police dog found El-Amin at about 10 p.m. Saturday.

El-Amin, who suffered a grazing wound across his chest and a bullet in his left arm, was treated at Gwinnett Medical Center, Spellman said. A weapon was recovered at the scene.

The officer who shot El-Amin has been placed on routine administrative leave. Spellman declined to release his name.

Three previous personal robberies had been reported at the Lawrenceville-Suwanee branch, and one had been reported at the Old Peachtree Road branch in Lawrenceville, Spellman said. The Gwinnett County Crime Analysis Unit was able to predict with 98 percent certainty the next robbery would be attempted by Sunday, Spellman said.

El-Amin is considered a suspect in the robbery at the Old Peachtree branch, Spellman said. Investigators are working to determine if they have evidence to link him with the other robberies as well, she said.
