NORCROSS - Greater Atlanta Christian crushed Cross Keys and narrowly defeated Decatur in three games in the Area 4-A/AA volleyball tournament on Saturday, earning a spot in the state playoffs.

Amanda Komisarow had a team-leading 23 kills and 12 aces as the Spartans improved to 31-10 this season. Anjelica Wilcox had 12 kills and eight blocks while Katie Rowell added 10 kills to the effort. Senior setter Alex Shelton had 40 assists and nine digs in the two matches.

The Spartans advance to play Wesleyan on Tuesday in the area tournament winner's bracket. That match will help determine seeding for the state playoffs. Decatur and Buford will also represent the area at the state tournament.

Mill Creek to play in area tourney final

NORCROSS - Mill Creek defeated North Gwinnett twice, including 26-24, 25-23 in the semifinals on Saturday to advance to the Area 7-AAAAA championship game and earn a state playoff berth.

The Hawks defeated North (25-20, 17-25, 25-16) in the first match of the day, lost to Norcross (25-22, 25-11) then came back to beat the Bulldogs again in the semis.

Mill Creek (22-18) plays Norcross in the finals on Tuesday to see which team will be the No. 1 seed from the area for state.

Olivia Day had 19 kills, 11 aces and 17 digs for the Hawks. Jessica Brower had seven aces and nine kills. Moneshia Simmons racked up 16 kills, seven blocks and six digs. Lindsay Davis added eight kills, nine blocks and an ace on the day.

North qualifies for state playoffs

NORCROSS - North Gwinnett lost a pair of matches to Mill Creek, but won three other matches at the Area 7-AAAAA Tournament on Saturday and earned a place in the state playoffs.

The Bulldogs defeated Duluth (25-17, 25-16), Collins Hill (25-20, 25-22) and Peachtree Ridge (25-19, 26-24). They were led by Megan Carnell (19 kills, nine aces, two blocks), Yasmin Appawu (31 kills, 14 aces, three blocks) and Meagan Booth (23 kills).

North (27-20 overall) will be the area's third seed at state.

CROSS COUNTRY

Berkmar boys win Pike County Invitational

ZEBULON - The Berkmar boys cross country team placed three runners in the top six and won the highest classification title at the Pike County Invitational on Saturday.

Miguel Velasquez was the Patriots' top finisher with the fourth-place time of 17 minutes and 48 seconds. But his teammates Ezequiel Vazquez and Brett Rosser were right on his heels, finishing fifth and sixth, respectively, in 17:50 and 17:51.

Shiloh was second behind Berkmar in the team totals and the Generals also took home the girls title.
