More plantings to happen at interchange

NORCROSS - Interstate 85 will continue to bloom.

Thursday, the Gwinnett Village Community Improvement District's board voted to spend an additional $30,000 to landscape I-85 at Indian Trail Road before the park-and-ride lot.

While the area had not been included in the original landscaping plan, CID Director Chuck Warbington said it was added at the request of business owners when the CID found it had extra funds for landscaping available.

In all, the district will spend $810,000 to plant flowers, shrubs and trees on I-85 ramps at Jimmy Carter Boulevard, Indian Trail and Beaver Ruin roads.

The latter two interchanges are complete, while Jimmy Carter's ramps have been cleared for planting.

Warbington said despite the drought, very few plants have needed to be replaced. Those that have died will be replaced in November, when the weather is cooler.

"We're real fortunate," he said.

The Gwinnett Place CID is also planting greenery at Steve Reynolds Boulevard and Pleasant Hill Road.

Joe Allen, that group's director, has said the plantings signify big changes that are taking place at the CIDs. With the 300,000 cars that travel that stretch of I-85 each day, Warbington said, the difference makes an impression on passing motorists and tells drivers that the area is beginning to change.
