Buford 55, Holy Innocents' 14

BUFORD - It has not happened very often this season, but Buford actually trailed Holy Innocents' 7-0 less than three minutes into Friday night's football game.

But the Golden Bears' lead was short lived as Buford answered quickly and never looked back for a 55-14 Region 6-AA win.

"We've been behind a few times this year," Buford head coach Jess Simpson said. "We have a very senior team and they are very poised. They know how to work through the problem and try to fix it."

The Wolves (7-0, 5-0 region) bit on a halfback pass the first play of the game and if it was not for Darrin McElroy's fumble as he ran alone down the right sideline it would have gone for an 80-yard touchdown. The Golden Bears (4-2, 3-1 region) retained possession and four plays later scored on a 14-yard run by Rob Aitkens.

"I'm sure we'll get to see it a few more times," Simpson said of the trick play.

Buford also fell for the same play in the fourth quarter when the game was out of reach and this time Holy Innocents' took it 86 yards for the score. The second catch was also made by McElroy.

Buford had two big interceptions in the second quarter, helping break the game open. The first came as Holy Innocents' was driving to try and tie the game and had the ball at Buford's 15 yard line. Kody Case made a play on a ball thrown to the corner and the Wolves took over at their own 20. Ten plays later Tyler King scored from 5 yards out on fourth-and-inches play.

The second came after Buford gave up an interception of its own and Holy Innocents' took over at its own 27. Ja'Kar Bridges stepped in front of a Will Allen pass and returned it to the Golden Bears' 24. Demetris Murray then carried it in on the next play for his second TD and Buford had a 28-7 lead with 2:04 left to play in the first half.

The Wolves rushed for 287 yards led by Murray, who had 88 yards on eight carries and did not play the second half.

Case caught one of only five passes thrown by quarterback Twoey Hosch in the game for a 34-yard score in the first quarter.

Cody Getz was a key part of a huge third quarter for the Wolves as he returned the opening kick of the second half to the Golden Bears' 43-yard line. After a delay of game call, Getz broke a 48-yard TD run for a 35-7 lead. The Wolves added three more scores in the frame, giving them a 55-7 lead going into the fourth quarter.
