Father accused of leaving teen on balcony

NORCROSS - A man accused of abandoning his teenage daughter on his apartment balcony is scheduled to make his first court appearance Friday.

Calvin Anthony Abram of Norcross was arrested Sunday on charges of cruelty to children and reckless conduct after allegedly locking his 14-year-old daughter out of their Valencia Park apartment, leaving her on the second floor balcony for three days.

Gwinnett County Police Department spokeswoman Cpl. Illana Spellman said Abram said the act was form of punishment for his daughter's unruly behavior.

According to a police report, Abram allowed his daughter to use the restroom before he would lock her outside in the morning on his way to work.

"Apparently, he would also leave a ladder so she could climb down off the balcony," Spellman said. "She said she climbed down to get a key from the leasing office to go into the apartment and use the bathroom. She gave the key to a neighbor and said she went back onto the balcony because she was scared what her father might do."

Spellman said neighbors called police Sunday to report the girl's condition. She said apartment residents told police the teen would occasionally ask neighbors for water or a soda to drink.

According to the report, Abram told police he no longer wanted his daughter and said there was no other family to care for his child.

Spellman said the 14-year-old was taken into the custody of the Department of Family and Child Services and showed no apparent signs of physical abuse.

Abram was arrested at the complex on Peachtree Corners Circle and booked into the Gwinnett County Jail where he remains on a $6,800 cash bond.

"I guess this is just one of those instances where he could have just asked for help," Spellman said. "But he did this, which unfortunately was illegal."
