Prep Roundup: Coan Ks 15 in GAC shutout

ATLANTA - Jessica Coan (24-0-1) gave up just four hits, struck out 15 and was a perfect 3-for-3 with an RBI at the plate as GAC topped Buford 3-0 in the winner's bracket of the Region 6-AA tournament.

Molly Mitchell and Madeline Baker each had an RBI with Baker and Chaney Means adding a run apiece. Alex McDavid was 2-for-3 for the Spartans (30-1-1).

Buford will get another shot at GAC after beating Wesleyan 6-3 to earn a spot in the region finals at 5 p.m. Thursday at GAC.

Pitcher Melissa Higginbotham (13-2) got the win over Wesleyan, giving up just five hits while striking out five. She was also 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs at the plate.

Jennifer Tucker (2-for-3) had a double and scored a run and Brandi Hellemn (2-for-2) scored a run in the win.


Parkview 4, South 0

SNELLVILLE - Jamie Dennis and Summer Rose each had two hits and an RBI to lead Parkview to a 4-0 win over South Gwinnett in the Region 8-AAAAA tournament on Monday.

Kelly Croxton got the win, tossing a complete-game shutout, giving up just four hits and striking out five.

Sara Coker went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Kendra Bryson added the final RBI for the Panthers. Jordan DeArmon, Jennifer Wormley and Courtney Folsom each had a hit for Parkview, which takes on Central Gwinnett today in the loser's bracket.

Wesleyan earns No. 3 seed

ATLANTA - Wesleyan started the day with a 7-4 win over Pace and ended with a 6-3 loss to Buford, but it was good enough to earn the Wolves a No. 3 seed in the state sectionals.

Paige Hamlin struck out four and Whitney Warren went 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs to lead the Wolves over Pace. Logan Morris (1-for-3) also had two RBIs in the win.

In the second game, Jessie Huff had two RBIs, Chelsea Sanders went 1-for-3 with a double and a run, and Emily Worthington went 1-for-2 with a run, but it wasn't enough for Wesleyan (12-17) against Buford.

Providence Christian 5, Landmark Christian 0

Brittany Ellington threw a complete-game shutout in the circle and went 2-for-3 at the plate to help the Stars (17-10-3) earn a first-round win in the Region 5-A tournament at Landmark Christian School in Fairburn.

Ellington gave up just three hits and struck out nine over seven innings, and also added a double and triple and drove in three.

Providence, which next meets Mt. Paran in a winner's bracket game tonight at 6, also got a big day at the plate from Caitlin McDowell (3-for-3, 2 stolen bases) and Courtney Frazier (2-for-3, RBI).


Buford splits pair

The Wolves (12-19) defeated Tallulah Falls 25-8, 23-25, 25-10 before falling to North Hall 25-16, 25-17 in a play day.

Hallye Jerkins had a combined 16 kills on the afternoon, while setter Ansley Roper handed out 36 assists.
