Board of Education to present list of legislative requests at meeting

SUWANEE - Superintendent J. Alvin Wilbanks will present a draft of the 2008 Legislative Program on Thursday to the Gwinnett County Board of Education during its monthly business meeting.

The board will be asked to adopt the program during its November meeting. Each year, the board presents delegates with its positions and state funding improvement requests that board members wish the General Assembly to consider.

These requests are "of critical importance to the funding and effective operation" of the school district, the agenda states.

School district staff members are also scheduled to present the legislative priorities during the board's 3 p.m. work session.

Also during the work session, Associate Superintendent Bobby Crowson is expected to give board members an update on the redistricting process, which opened for public comment last week.

About 23,000 students will be affected by this redistricting, which will create the boundaries for three new clusters. Maps of the proposed attendance zones for the new schools are available at schools and online, and public input will be accepted until Nov. 1.

The work session and the business meeting, which starts at 7 p.m., are open to the public, and community members can sign up to address the board at a 6:30 p.m. forum. Both meetings take place at the Instructional Support Center at 437 Old Peachtree Road N.W. in Suwanee.
