Chateau Elan holds weight-loss contest

BRASELTON - Close to 100 residents living inside the posh golf resort of Chateau Elan have made the commitment to lose some unwanted pounds.

Diana Severson, fitness director at the community's fitness club, said the idea for a weight-loss challenge evolved after watching the popular weight-loss reality TV show "The Biggest Loser."

While the goal for each person taking the challenge is different, Severson said each participant has been dedicated to losing weight.

"I think everybody wants to get something different," said Mike Bishop, vice president of operations for Chateau Elan. "They can modifying the plan to fit their lifestyle."

Before getting started, each challenger filled out a health questionnaire, determining the goals they'd like to reach at the end of the 12-week program.

Filled with meal planning, workout sessions and one-on-one personal training, the program started only four weeks ago, but Severson said some of the participants have already lost 10 to 15 pounds.

"They're doing beautifully," Severson said. "The best part of what we do is seeing these people losing the weight. They walk a little taller."

Each challenger can chose from a five-, six- or seven-day-a-week program as part of the weight-loss challenge.

Severson said there are weigh-ins three times a week to chart each participants' loss.

At the end of the 12 weeks, the club will celebrate all the challengers' accomplishments. Severson said the top male and female losers will be recognized and presented with prizes at that time.

"We'll be looking at what percentage of weight and body fat they lost, as well as what they learned during all this," Severson said. "We want everyone to have an equal shot at this."
