NORCROSS - It takes four quarters to win a football game and Wesleyan used all of it, including a late game defensive stand, to secure a 28-20 victory over Avondale.
Wesleyan head coach Franklin Pridgen was happy with the way the game was won.
"Our defense has been keeping us in games all year. The fact that they did it again (Friday) night is no surprise," he said.
Avondale (1-4, 0-3 6-AA) scored first on an 11-yard touchdown reception by Greg Boyd to take a 6-0 lead.
Wesleyan answered quickly with a methodical drive that culminated in a 3-yard run by Derren Evans, and the extra point gave the Wolves (3-3, 2-2) a 7-6 lead.
The Wolves would step up in the second quarter with another scoring run by Evans, who amassed 140 yards on 25 carries on the night, and a 53-yard pass from quarterback Brent Pugh to receiver James Ramsey, after a 65-yard TD run by Avondale's Zach McKinstry tied the game, to help the team to a 21-14 halftime lead.
"Derren is a workhorse for us, he is a very powerful kid and a great asset to have in the backfield. Our offensive line stepped up and blew Avondale off the ball."
After a quick third quarter in which Avondale running back Antonio Scott eluded defenders and burst down the field for a 52-yard score to cut the Wolves' lead to a single point after a botched two-point conversion, the game would be decided in the final quarter.
Midway through the period, after both teams exchanged turnovers, Wesleyan's Kyle Karempelis, who gained 98 yards on 12 carries, finished off an impressive 55-yard drive with a 12-yard TD run that gave Wesleyan 28-20 lead.
Avondale would get the ball and drive down to the Wesleyan 20, but Zac Johnston intercepted a last second pass by Scott in the end zone to seal the third win of the season for the Wolves.
