Parkview 10, Shiloh 7

SNELLVILLE - Parkview has never lost consecutive region games under head coach Cecil Flowe and after surviving a scare from Shiloh on Friday still hasn't.

The Panthers took advantage of several Shiloh miscues in the second half and scored 10 unanswered points to beat the Generals 10-7 at Shiloh Community Stadium.

"I just told them to relax and play football," said Flowe, whose team trailed 7-0 at halftime. "We were a little too timid in the first half. I just told them to quit worrying about making mistakes and play football. In the second half, we got up under their chin and we were able to do what we wanted to."

After losing to South Gwinnett last week, Friday's win for Parkview kept the Panthers from losing back-to-back region games for the first time since 1991.

Parkview (4-1, 1-1 in Region 8-AAAAA) managed just 59 total yards and two first downs in the first half. The Panthers was able to get their running game going in the second half as they rushed for 150 yards and 209 for the game.

"We kept going three-and-out in the first half and we knew we had to put something together in the second half," Parkview quarterback Clayton Wilkin said. "We just started popping out 10-yard runs."

Wilkin rushed for 43 yards, including a one-yard touchdown to start the fourth quarter to put the Panthers up for good 10-7. The junior also completed 3 of 5 passes for 33 yards.

Shiloh quarterback Ira Johnson (17 carries, 75 yards) led an eight-play, 70-yard drive capped off by a 12-yard touchdown run to give the Generals a 7-0 lead with 7:44 left in the first half.

Shiloh (1-4, 0-2) built another long drive to set up another scoring attempt. Johnson completed a fourth-and-10 pass to Brandon Thomas. Three plays later, Johnson scrambled all the way to the seven, but a block in the back brought the ball back to the 21. Shiloh settled for a 39-yard field goal attempt by Ernst Brun, but the kick failed and Shiloh led 7-0 at the half.

"I'm tired of saying the same thing every week," Shiloh coach Nick Davis said. "It's just the little things that beat us two weeks in a row. If you look at tonight we had two penalties on that drive at the end of the first half. I felt like we could have scored there and gone up 14-0 at the half."

The missed scoring attempt was just one of the many miscues for the Generals.

On Shiloh's first play of the second half, the Generals fumbled the ball and Parkview recovered at the Shiloh 10. The Generals' defense held strong, holding the Panthers to a Jordan Stowe 22-yard field goal to make it a 7-3 game.

Parkview got the ball back and converted on third and 13 on a Wilkin 16-yard pass to Brandon Evans (16 carries, 54 yards) to keep its drive alive. TaRon Squires rushed for 27 yards on the next two plays to set up Wilkin's one-yard score.

"Like I told the kids, when you're sitting there up 7-3 you can't play like the game is already won. You still have to make plays," Davis said.

On the Panthers' next possession, A.J. Carroll (eight carries, 76 yards) broke off a 49-yard run, but fumbled at the Shiloh 23. The Generals got the ball to midfield and on fourth and inches tried to draw Parkview offsides, but instead got a delay of game penalty and had to punt.

The Shiloh defense stopped Parkview again and forced them to punt, but a muffed punt allowed Parkview to recover the ball with less than two minutes in the game to seal the win.

"Shiloh is a good team and they played their hearts out," Wilkin said. "They did a good job on defense. They're strong and a tough team."

Prince Nwachukwu led the Generals defense with 11 tackles and Deanthone Debardlabon had eight stops.

"We could have folded, but we didn't," Flowe said. "Our backs are against the wall and this was a game we needed."

Parkview's Winton Steward had 13 tackles and Matt Johnson added nine.
