Preliminary hearing set for Winder soldier accused of murder in Iraq

WINDER - A Winder soldier charged with murdering an Iraqi civilian will face an Article 32 hearing Oct. 18 at Wheeler Army Airfield in Hawaii, according to information released by the U. S. Army.

No information was available by press time as to what penalties he and another soldier will face if convicted.

Spc. Christopher P. Shore of Winder and Sgt. 1st Class Trey A. Corrales of San Antonio, Texas, are charged with one count each of premeditated murder in the death of an Iraqi civilian that allegedly occurred June 23 near the city of Kirkuk, about 155 miles north of Baghdad.

An Article 32 hearing is a military procedure similar to a grand jury hearing under civilian law. An Article 32 hearing is required to determine whether there is enough evidence to merit sending the defendant to a general court martial.

Corrales's Article 32 hearing is scheduled for Oct. 22.

Corrales and Shore are assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, which is part of the 25th Infantry Division based in Hawaii.

Corrales and Shore are scouts, according to the Army Times. Their unit arrived in Iraq in July or August of 2006.

Shore and Corrales are two of five soldiers in the 25th Infantry Division accused of murdering Iraqis in separate incidents since April, according to the Army Times.

Their battalion commander, Lt. Col. Michael Browder, was fired July 3 for leadership failure but is not a suspect and has not been charged with any offense, the military said.
