WINDER - A Barrow County Sheriff's deputy was arrested Tuesday and charged with 20 counts of sexual exploitation of a child.
Deputy Jason Gaub, 32, of Winder, has been employed by the Barrow County Sheriff's Department for about four years, according to Chief Deputy Maj. Murray Kogod. Gaub is not housed in the Barrow County Jail and has not yet had a bond hearing, according to a booking agent. "The charges are related to his possession of child pornography," Kogod said. About six weeks ago, officials with the Georgia Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force contacted the Barrow County Sheriff's Department with information that led officials to look at Gaub as a possible suspect, Kogod said. The Sheriff's Department worked jointly with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to research the allegations. Those findings led to a search of Gaub's Winder home and his subsequent arrest. Gaub was off-duty when he was arrested and the deeds he is accused of doing happened while he was off-duty, too, Kogod said. The arrest has left Sheriff's Department personnel shocked and disappointed, Kogod said. "We at the Barrow County Sheriff's Office do not differentiate between the general public and sheriff's office employees when it comes to the commission of an illegal act," Kogod said. "In fact, we hold ourselves to an even higher standard." Gaub is married and has no children, Kogod said. "He's actually been a pretty good employee," Kogod said.More like this story
