HIV-positive man indicted in rape of fellow patient

LAWRENCEVILLE - An HIV-positive psychiatry patient was indicted this week for allegedly raping a fellow patient while she was sedated at an area hospital.

Wesley Randall Hatfield, 28, faces charges of rape, reckless conduct and criminal attempt to commit escape that stem from the Sept. 2 incident.

Hatfield was arrested a day after police say the rape occurred. He remains in the Gwinnett County Jail without bond.

Police arrested Hatfield, formerly a patient at SummitRidge Center for Psychiatry in Lawrenceville, after the victim told authorities she felt someone in bed with her.

According to an indictment released Wednesday, Hatfield tried to escape his medical unit by walking to an admissions area and "informing the deputy that he was set to be released."

He is charged with reckless conduct for not warning the victim he is HIV-positive, the indictment says.

SummitRidge is a Gwinnett Medical Center facility specializing in psychiatric and addiction medicine and services, according to the facility's Web site.

A hospital spokesperson could not be reached Thursday for comment.

The hospital suspended a nurse and three technicians involved with the incident when the investigation began.

A hospital spokesperson said in September the employees will remain suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.
