Hope Clinic recognizes area physicians for helping uninsured

DULUTH - A local nonprofit health clinic is on a mission to educate the community about the county's large uninsured population and in doing so are honoring a number of physicians with the same goal.

For the second year, the Hope Clinic has brought together Gwinnett's health professionals and health-minded community members for a dinner recognizing those who have helped the clinic in its goal to serve uninsured patients.

Four Gwinnett-area physicians were recognized Friday night during the Hope Clinic's second annual Circle of Hope Awards Dinner at the Sugarloaf Country Club in Duluth.

Doctors Robert C. Fritz, John T. Hydrick, W. Gordon Tanner and Nicholas A. Tiliakos were presented with the Circle of Hope Award for compassion in medicine.

"In many cases these physicians don't get anything," said Hope Clinic Executive Director Pam Martin. The dinner is an opportunity to recognize them for their work, she added.

Gwinnett Community Clinic, Good Samaritan Health Center of Gwinnett, Hebron Community Health Centers, Gwinnett Medical Center and others were also recognized and awarded plaques during the event for their work in assisting the uninsured community.

"We are in this all together," Martin said. "Without their (doctors' and other clinics') help, the uninsured don't have anywhere to go."

The event also served as a fundraiser for the clinic. Attendees could make donations toward the operation of the Hope Clinic.

Martin said additional donations could be made by calling the clinic at 770-685-1300.

"We've got 150,000 uninsured in Gwinnett County and our thing is to make a difference," Martin said.
