CUMMING - The Collins Hill defense intercepted South Forsyth quarterback
Brian Adams four times and held strong on a late-game drive by the War
Eagles that could have potentially tied the game.
The 10-3 victory made the Eagles 4-6 overall and evened their Region
7-AAAAA record at 4-4 after a 0-5 start to the season.
Collins Hill head coach Larry Sherrill is very proud of his team's
ability to turn things around the second half of the season.
"It vindicates our team. We played a great schedule the first five
games, but we made some big mistakes especially in the kicking game as
far as turnovers. We went to work and got better in the kicking game and
stopped turning the ball over."
Sherrill was also very happy with the effort his defense displayed in
the win over South Forsyth (3-7, 3-5 region) although the offense
struggled to move the ball most of the game.
"We had some bad things happen offensively with a couple of dropped
passes," Sherrill said, "but I am very proud of our defense for sticking
to it. We played really solid D all year long."
After a pick by Collins Hill's Brad Wood in the first quarter the Eagles
took over at the South Forsyth 27 yard line. They were unable to get
into the end zone but Sean Binner converted a 29-yard field goal with
5:09 to play to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead.
On South Forsyth's next possession, Josh Sneed picked off Adams and the
Eagles were in business again. Six rushes and one 26-yard pass reception
later, Charles Perkins took it over the top and in from the one and
Collins Hill was up 10-0 with 10:49 to play in the first half.
Late in the first half the War Eagles got on the board when Dan
Middleton connected on a 36-yard field goal making it 10-3 Collins Hill.
Neither team was able to move the ball successfully in the second half
until there was less than two minutes to play in the game and South
Forsyth moved down the field for one last shot at tying the game. The
War Eagles got inside the Collins Hill 20 but the defense stiffened and
sacked Adams on the last play as the clock ran out.
Perkins led the Eagles' offense with 42 yards on 23 carries and the one
TD. Brent McDonald was 5 of 15 passing for 71 yards.
