Central Gwinnett 35, Shiloh 27

SNELLVILLE - Next year can't get here soon enough for Central Gwinnett.

With Diante Drake running for three touchdowns and quarterback Steven

Bott passing for two more, Central whipped Shiloh 35-27 Friday at Shiloh

Community Stadium.

Both schools finished out of the playoffs in Region 8-AAAAA, but Bott

won the battle of the sophomore quarterbacks against Shiloh's Mark

Wright as each team began preparing for next season.

With juniors Drake and receiver Malcolm Moulton also returning, the

Black Knights (4-6, 2-5) will have the nucleus of a strong offense going

into 2008.

However, Shiloh's Wright scored the game's first TD on a 1-yard plunge.

The score came after Shiloh's Jeremy Johnson caused Central's Drake to

fumble on Central's first possession and linebacker Deanthone

Debardlabon returned the fumble 23 yards to the Central 1.

Bott and the Black Knights answered quickly with two TD passes. Central

drove 74 yards for the tying touchdown after making a first down on a

four-and-one in its own territory and getting 15 yards later in the

drive following a personal foul penalty by Shiloh (2-8, 1-6). On

third-and-9 from the Shiloh 17, Bott hit wide receiver Danny Sekerak for

the TD.

Bott took over the quarterback job at mid-season and earned praised from

Central Gwinnett head coach Dennis Roland.

"Our kids played hard and Steven played his best game of the season

tonight," Roland said.

But the play of the game came on Central's next possession. On a

third-and-7 from its own 17, Moulton made a one-handed catch of a short

Bott pass, ducked under a defender, then ran across the field and down

the left sideline for an 83-yard TD.

"It's the best catch I've ever seen him make," said Roland.

Drake took over in the second half, often taking direct snaps from

center and darting through the Shiloh line for quick gains. With three

second half scores, and a two-point conversion, he finished with 15 TDs

for the season and earned the game ball from Roland. He carried the ball

36 times for 185 yards.

After carrying 17 times for only 61 yards in the first half, Drake score

twice in the third quarter on two 7-yard runs. He sealed the game with a

1-yard score after Shiloh had closed the gap to 15 points early in the

fourth quarter.

While Bott completed 8 of 13 passes for 182 yards, Wright did not

complete a pass in four attempts and had one
