ATHENS - Dacula saw its hopes of making it to the Class AAAA state
playoffs disappear Friday night as the Falcons fell to Cedar Shoals 19-16 in overtime. After coming out victorious in a must win game last week, the Falcons (5-5) were unable to secure another victory which ends its season. James Gordon of Cedar Shoals (9-1) intercepted a Taylor Smith pass in overtime to secure the victory for the Jaguars. It was a defensive battle in the first half, with both teams struggling to run and throw the ball. Cedar Shoals got on the board late in the first quarter with a field goal, but didn't score again in the first half, partially due to two fumbles by De De Lattimore and Hykeem Hall. Dacula capitalized on the fumbles and put a field goal and TD up on the board. Zach Scruggs found the end zone late in the second half with a 13 yard run to make the score 9-6 in favor of Dacula. Perhaps the biggest surprise of the first half was the play of senior Cisco Barry. Barry put up 247 rushing yards on 30 carries last week against Salem, but was help to 16 yards on seven carries in the first half. The Jaguars defense did a great job of stopping the run and continued that effort going into the second half. After a punt on its first possession of the half, Cedar Shoals got the ball back and marched down field for a touchdown. Hall scored on a 40-yard run to tie the score at 9-9. Dacula quarterback Taylor Smith was hit hard and fumbled the ball on his own 16-yard line midway through the fourth quarter, which proved to be costly for the Falcons. Four plays later Hall ran 6 yards into the end zone to give the lead back to the Jaguars. Barry looked like his former self on Dacula's next drive, running 46 yards deep into Jaguar's territory. Scruggs then sprinted 19 yards to tie the game at 16 with 5 minutes left on the clock. Cedar Shoals failed to score when they got the ball back and the game went into overtime. Cedar Shoals won the toss, and elected to get the ball first. After two failed pass attempts from freshman quarterback Martay Mattox and a run for no yards, the Jaguars were forced to kick a field goal. Following a big sack on second down, Dacula was forced to throw the ball. Smith threw an interception, marking an end to Dacula's season.
