The 65 singers of the Stone Mountain Chorus will be saddlin' up their ponies and ridin' into Duluth for a special concert this weekend.
"A Fistful of Harmony" will take the audience back to the wild, wild West through the medium of song. Performances are at 8:30 tonight and at 3 and 8 p.m. Saturday at the Performing Arts Center at Gwinnett Center in Duluth.
"Veterans Day weekend is the perfect time to honor those who have sacrificed to serve our country in our armed forces," said Stone Mountain Chorus spokesman Mike Walsh. "It is also a time when the Stone Mountain Chorus celebrates its 27th year of delivering the best in four-part harmony to the metropolitan Atlanta area. This year's program is filled with 'barbershop harmony' songs that will take you back to the romantic, old West."
The performance will feature the chorus' own chapter quartets, including the 2007 International Quartet fourth-place bronze medalists State Line Grocery.
Another featured act will be the guest quartet Storm Front, 2007 International Quartet third-place bronze medalists from Denver. Storm Front is one of the most popular show quartets in the barbershop harmony world, and this Atlanta appearance is a coup for the area's arts community.
Tickets cost $18 in advance for a reserved seat. All tickets purchased at the door are $20. A discounted rate of $15 is available for groups of 12 or more, as well as seniors and full-time students who purchase tickets in advance for the shows tonight or at 3 p.m. Saturday.
To purchase tickets, call the Stone Mountain Chorus information line at 770-978-8053 or 678-534-8204. Tickets may also be purchased from any chorus member.
On Monday, the Stone Mountain Chorus will hold an open house to entice new members to join. Director Drew McMillan invites all men who like to sing to come try out for the openings available in all voice parts for the 2008 season.
Men who want to improve their vocal and performing skills and enjoy the fun and fellowship of close, four-part harmony singing are welcomed.
The open house will start at 7:30 p.m. at the Hudgens Center for the Arts, 6400 Sugarloaf Parkway in Duluth, part of the Gwinnett Center complex.
For more information about the open house, call the Stone Mountain Chorus information line at 770-978-8053, or visit www.stonemountainchorus.org.
