Schools to participate in toy drive
Football rivals to help set world record with collections

LILBURN - Football rivals are teaming up to collect children's toys in an effort to help break the Guinness world record for the largest toy drive.

Brookwood and Parkview high schools are collecting items to donate to Toys for Tots, a program that distributes toys as Christmas gifts to needy children. All toys collected at either high school by Monday will be counted in Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium World Record Toy Drive, which is attempting to break the record for largest toy drive by collecting more than 12,000 pounds of toys.

LeAnn Hedrick, a teacher at Brookwood, said the two schools decided to join together to help the community.

"We're trying to do what's right for the kids," said Hedrick, who spoke on behalf of both schools. "Part of our job in education is to teach the students how to be ... active members of the community. Plus, it's fun to see the toys pile up. It causes them to stop and think about what it means."

Toys can be donated at tonight's football game at Parkview High School or dropped off at either school Monday, Hedrick said. Toys should be new, in their original packaging and free of gift wrap.

Hedrick said she has been encouraging people to donate heavy toys. Students have donated wagons, scooters, board games, metal trucks and remote control cars, she said.

Although toys should be delivered by Monday to count toward the world record, Hedrick said people can continue to donate items throughout the month to either school for Toys for Tots.
