Sugar Hill votes Gajewski to council

SUGAR HILL - A seat on Sugar Hill's City Council has been a desire of Susie Gajewski's for about 20 years. Tuesday night the 43-year-old's dream came true.

Gajewski landed a seat on the council with 442 unofficial votes over fellow candidate David Deal's 379.

Having lived in Sugar Hill for 25 years, Gajewski said this year she finally had time to run for office.

Owner of her own leasing company, Gajewski previously told the Post she was for adding parks and trails in the city.

"I would like to create a live, work, walk recreational environment for the city," Gajewski said previously. Speeding up the widening of Ga. Highway 20 and developing the city's downtown area were also on her to-do list.

"I whole heartedly want to make Sugar Hill a better place to live," Gajewski said. "I have a lot of cherished memories in Sugar Hill."

Gajewski did not return calls for comment Tuesday night.

Incumbents Steve Edwards and Mark Cohen ran unopposed for the remaining council seats.

Election Superintendent Jeanne Ferguson said 794 voters cast their ballots during the election and 72 absentee ballots were sent in, coming together for a total of 866 voters.

While a typical turnout for the city, Ferguson said she'd always like to see more.

"We had a pretty steady stream all day," Ferguson said. "And we had no problems at the polls."

Voters cast ballots in favor of a tax allocation district referendum, passing 592 to 258. The referendum to increase the millage rate for funding of a new Police Department did not fare as well.

The increase was voted down with 647 voting against the increase and only 219 voting in favor.
