Gritty little secret of gardening

If you've asked a question about your landscape and granite grit is the answer, you're not a beginning gardener anymore.

And your response will be identical to the rest of us who discovered granite grit through our landscapes: "What's that?" Then, once you know what it is, your inner voice will say, "Oh, no, that seems like a lot of work."

Dead Frenchman and great critic of America Alexis de Tocqueville would be pleased with this American response to gardening. Most of us want beautiful results without hard work. Now I'm hearing the cliche, "You only get out of it what you put into it."

Even for the tiniest of beautiful landscapes, the input of hard word is in equal proportion to the work put into the largest estates.

Celebrate holiday with festive margaritas

Nester Needs by Anna Ferguson

My brother-in-law is the luckiest guy on the planet. No, it's certainly not because he married my sister. It's because his birthday is May 5, also known as Cinco de Mayo.

How much better could a birthday be? It's a day devoted to fiestas. This year, we're planning the Cinco de Mayo/birthday bash to end all Cinco de Mayo/birthday bashes.

The joy of the holiday is its laid-back nature. There aren't a whole lot of things you need to have an all-out shindig. But there is one thing every Cinco de Mayo soiree needs: margaritas.

Highway 78 express bus service gaining riders

LAWRENCEVILLE - A month into the creation of a new express bus on U.S. Highway 78, officials say ridership is strong.

In the month of April, the bus had an average of 83 boardings daily, said William Mecke, spokesman for the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority.

A boarding is the equivalent of a trip, so if one person rides the bus both to Atlanta and back, it is two boardings. In all, there were 1,737 boardings in the month of April and the number rose from 53 the first day the bus was operating to 118 April 30.
