Stores cited for sales to minors

LAWRENCEVILLE - Nearly three dozen businesses in Gwinnett County recently sold alcohol to minors, police said.

The Gwinnett County Police Department's Vice Unit conducted an operation during the week of May 14 in which people under the age of 21 who were not carrying picture identification attempted to purchase alcohol from establishments such as gas stations, grocery stores and restaurants, police spokesman Cpl. Darren Moloney said.

Of the 213 locations checked for compliance, 35 received citations for selling alcohol to minors, Moloney said.

"This was not a test to see if store employees could recognize fraudulent information," Moloney said in a news release. "The object was to see if store employees would comply with county and state law and check identification to see if the alcoholic beverages could be sold."

Among the locations that were cited were two Publix locations in Lawrenceville, according to the release.

Brenda Reid, the media and community relations manager for Publix's Atlanta district, declined to comment on the citations but said employees are trained to ask for picture identification when a customer is purchasing alcohol. In addition, signs are posted and the cash register is programmed to remind cashiers to ask for identification, she said.

Cashiers who are familiar with customers who are purchasing alcohol can override a prompt that asks the employee to check identification, Reid said. Employees who violate the store's policies receive a counseling statement from a manager and receive additional training, and cashiers who further violate the polices receive further discipline, which can include being fired, she said.

The police department will attempt to suspend or revoke the liquor license of establishments that have a history of selling alcohol to minors, Moloney said.

The compliance checks will be conducted more frequently during the summer now that schools are no longer in session, Moloney said.
