Snellville resident sends books to soldiers

Staff Intern

SNELLVILLE - One person really can make a significant difference, and Selma Baum exemplifies this statement.

Baum, a Snellville resident, spends her leisure time boxing up novels, magazines and candy, and then sending those boxes to troops in Iraq.

The mission began in February 2006, when Baum's neighbor, Barry Navarro, was deployed overseas to Iraq.

Baum wanted to find a way to help Navarro, and she discovered the soldiers did not have many activities to occupy their free time. The boxes of reading material emerged and became an important part of Baum's life.

"It's a show of thanks," Baum said of her care packages. "And it allows me to focus my energy on something other than myself."

Navarro has returned to Snellville, and he said the boxes Baum sent really made a difference for him and his fellow troops.

There was limited reading material prior to Baum's packages, and Navarro said Baum's steady shipments of books and magazines gave the soldiers something to look forward to.

"I was excited to have books to read," Navarro said. "And I was appreciative of the large amount of books sent."

Because Baum sent so many packages, Navarro accumulated an ample collection of books he could share.

"We made a small library in our loading dock," Navarro said, describing how Baum's generosity benefited his entire unit.
