Falwell leaves a lasting legacy on politics

The Rev. Jerry Falwell, who died in his office Tuesday at the age 73, was a seminal figure in the rise of what liberals despairingly called the ''Religious Right.'' Without him, it is doubtful Christian fundamentalists, Evangelical Christians and conservative Roman Catholics would ever have mobilized into the significant voting bloc that elected Ronald Reagan twice, George H.W. Bush once and the current President Bush.

Woman arrives home to find intruders

•DULUTH - A Duluth woman said she arrived home Monday morning to find two armed men in her home.

According to a police report, the woman believes she left the garage door to her Berkshire Eve Court home open and two men entered her home.

The woman said she was coming home from dropping her children off at school and one of the men used a stun gun on her, sending her to the ground in pain.

The woman's husband, who was sleeping in a nearby bedroom, heard the commotion and approached the men. One of the men, described as Hispanic, pointed a gun at the man and demanded money.

The armed man attempted to go to the upstairs bedroom of the home but he and the other man fled when they were caught by surprise on the stairs by the housekeeper who was on the phone with 911. The homeowners believed there was a third Hispanic man who drove a get-away vehicle.

Proper watering will help home landscapes survive droughtGardening in Gwinnett

Gwinnett County Extension Service

Most of Georgia is in a serious drought, and many localities have instituted water restrictions. If the drought continues, a water ban may be imposed on some communities.

The Gwinnett County Extension Office has received numerous calls from homeowners with questions about how to help drought-stressed plants and proper watering techniques. Most of the plant samples we receive to diagnose are stressed due to water-related problems, and many of the questions we receive are along the lines of, "How often should I water my lawn to keep it green?"

Old World getawayCraftsman creates resort in his Dacula backyard

Staff Contributor

Visitors to John Bighta's spacious backyard sometimes forget they are in rural Dacula. Wandering from the state-of-the-art outdoor kitchen, to the sparkling pool surrounded by lush tropical trees and plants, to the spacious patio that overlooks a trickling pond filled with fish, they wonder if they have somehow stumbled into a five-star European resort.

And, in a way, they have.

As part of a 10-year project, Bighta employed the craftsman skills he learned in his native Poland and as a custom home builder in Long Island to create a vacation getaway in his own backyard.

There are no easy answers with mulch

Phil Gibson, instructor of horticulture at Gwinnett College, said, many years ago, "Ask a gardener a question and they'll have an answer. Maybe not the right answer, but always an answer."

If you ask about mulch in your landscape, you're correct to expect an easy, no controversy answer. But the biggest mulch questions - what type and how much? - are both controversial.

Charges pending in crash

SNELLVILLE - Charges are pending against a 37-year-old Stone Mountain man involved in a wreck that resulted in the death of a 21-year-old motorcyclist.

Preliminary investigations indicate Anthony M. Bryant was driving a 2004 Dodge Ram truck east on Stone Mountain Highway about 9 p.m. Tuesday when he attempted to make a left turn into the Home Depot parking lot in front of the motorcyclist, said Gwinnett County Police Department spokesman Cpl. Darren Moloney.

Bradley James Peerson of Tucker, driver of the 2002 Honda motorcycle, "laid down" the bike in an attempt to avoid hitting Bryant's truck but was thrown from the bike, Moloney said.

Peerson's motorcycle struck Bryant's vehicle and a tire from the Dodge truck flew off upon impact, hitting a Jeep Cherokee traveling in a westbound lane, according to a Police Department media release.
