Gwinnett Daily Post
LAWRENCEVILLE - Nearly 80 Gwinnett County Public Schools high school students will be participating in the Governor's Honors Program this summer.
The Honors Program is a six-week summer instructional program designed to provide intellectually gifted and artistically talented students educational opportunities not usually available during the regular school year. Teachers nominate rising juniors and seniors in a specific instructional area in which the students' abilities, aptitudes and interest lie, according to the program's Web site. Students pick a major and minor areas of study from the following: agriscience/biotechnology, agriscience/environmental science, communications arts, foreign languages, mathematics, science, social studies, visual art, music, dance, design, technology and executive management. Instruction is also provided in computers, counseling, library/media and physical fitness. The number of students attending the program depends on a nomination quota of each school system and private school. The quota is determined by the average daily attendance of 10th- and 11th-graders. Out of Gwinnett's 211 nominees, 78 students were selected representing 15 high schools, making up 11 percent of the total number of students from across Georgia selected for the program, according to a news release from the school system. Students are selected based on academic records, recommendations from schools and community members, and interviews and auditions. The program takes place June 10 to July 21 at Valdosta State University.
