Suwanee officers to debut badges

SUWANEE - Suwanee police officers will soon be wearing the community on their chests.

Starting Monday, Suwanee police officers will have new badges featuring Suwanee's signature lamppost and its City Hall/police building.

The badges have been custom-designed for Suwanee.

"We don't police in a typical fashion in Suwanee," Police Chief Mike Jones said. "And so, we don't want our badges to be generic either. We want them to be as unique as we are."

The current gold-plated badges are larger and feature an eagle at the top with the Georgia seal in the center. The new badges include a silver badge with gold layers for patrol officers and a gold badge with silver layers for officers with the rank of corporal and higher.

Created by SymbolArts of Utah, the badges cost $60 each and are paid for by forfeiture funds.

The back of each badge is engraved with the words of the Suwanee police motto: professional, ethical, knowledgeable.

After the new City Hall at Town Center is completed at the end of 2008, the City Hall/police building will only house the Police Department.
