Celebrate holiday with festive margaritas

Nester Needs by Anna Ferguson

My brother-in-law is the luckiest guy on the planet. No, it's certainly not because he married my sister. It's because his birthday is May 5, also known as Cinco de Mayo.

How much better could a birthday be? It's a day devoted to fiestas. This year, we're planning the Cinco de Mayo/birthday bash to end all Cinco de Mayo/birthday bashes.

The joy of the holiday is its laid-back nature. There aren't a whole lot of things you need to have an all-out shindig. But there is one thing every Cinco de Mayo soiree needs: margaritas.

To blend up smooth, restaurant-style margaritas at home, try the Margarator. The large-capacity blender can hold up to one gallon of mix, about three times more than traditional blenders.

Blending drinks with the Margarator is simple: just add the ice and the drink mixture, replace the lid and flip the switch. A front pour-sprout handle makes it easy to fill your glass. The machine is also portable - it can even be plugged into a car lighter for tailgate parties. The Margarator retails for $149.99 at J.C. Penney and Target.

Take a trip to Margaritaville - where's it's always 5 o'clock - with the Margaritaville Frozen Concoction Maker. This frozen drink maker automatically mixes the right proportion of shaved ice with the ingredients and blends up to 32 ounces of margaritas. The low-maintenance concoction maker boasts a drip-free spout and easy-to-clean design. Shot glasses and a salt rimmer are included. Retailing for $299.99, it is sold at Bed, Bath and Beyond and online at www.margaritavillecargo.com.

After a batch has been blended up, serve margaritas to party guests in the stylish Libbey Cancun seven-piece margarita set. The six 9-ounce glasses are made with wide brims, ideal for rimming with salt or sugar and garnishing with lime slices. The set also includes a clear glass pitcher that can hold about 96 ounces of margaritas. As the set is dishwasher-safe, it's easy to clean. Retailing for $19.99, the set is sold at Linen's 'N Things.

Margaritas aren't just any old drink, so they shouldn't be served in just any old glass. Precidio's Acrylic Cactus Stem Margarita Glasses set is a fun and funky option. As the name suggests, the glasses feature a bright green stem made to look like a cactus. Sold in a pack of six, the glasses are made from ultra sturdy, non-breakable plastic and are a lively addition to the party table. Prices vary, and the set is sold online at Amazon.com and Shop.com.
