Smoke inhalation caused man's death, coroner says

WINDER - A partially burned man found dead near a grass fire March 29 died of smoke inhalation, Barrow County Coroner David Crosby said Tuesday.

Kenneth Douglas Mohard, 38, of Flowery Branch, was found near a brush fire at 513 Tucker Road near Winder.

Barrow County firefighters were answering their fourth fire call in about 11 hours, all in the same area, when they discovered Mohard's body near the fire.

Mohard had no criminal record, said Maj. Murray Kogod, Barrow County's chief deputy. He was living with his parents at the time of his death and had been reported missing by his father the day before the fires.

That area had suffered a rash of fires since the beginning of the year, Fire Chief Mitch Kitchens said.

"In the two months prior to Mohard's death, nine or 10 fires within a 5-mile radius of that area have gone unsolved," Kitchens said. "At this point, we have no evidence to connect Mohard to any of those fires."
