WINDER - The body of a Winder-Barrow High School senior found dead at a party Sunday showed no signs of trauma, David Crosby, Barrow County's coroner, reported Tuesday.
It could take months to determine exactly what killed Leland Lamar Martin. Barrow County officials are awaiting the results of a toxicology report that could take months to acquire, according to Crosby. Martin, 18, of Winder, died Sunday during an after-prom party at 586 Quail Trail Road in Auburn. Barrow County emergency medical personnel found Martin dead inside the house at 12:15 a.m. Sunday. The prom, held at the Classic Center in Athens, ended at 11:30 p.m. Martin was an honor student at WBHS who won a full scholarship to Young Harris College, a private liberal arts college in North Georgia, WBHS Principal Rob Johnson said. He had no criminal record, according to Maj. Murray Kogod, Barrow County's chief deputy, and had never been in trouble at school, Johnson said. "We are saddened by the tragic events about this fine young man who had such promise," said Dr. Ron Saunders, Barrow County's superintendent of schools. Georgia's single toxicology lab, located at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation headquarters in Atlanta, services the state, Crosby said. "Generally it takes months to get results," Crosby said. "We farm out some cases in which there is no chance of prosecuting."More like this story
