DACULA - A brush fire destroyed nearly two acres of woods and an old abandoned vehicle Tuesday afternoon near the railroad tracks off Winder Highway by Freemans Mill Road. No injuries were reported.
"The fire appears to have started in the brush along the railroad tracks and spread to the woods," said Lt. Thomas Rutledge, Gwinnett County Fire Department spokesman. "The flames spread quickly due to dry brush conditions and steady winds." No structures were involved. It took firefighters almost two hours to extinguish the blaze located about 1,000 feet off the roadway and in a difficult area for fire crews to access. The fire department used its 3,000-gallon water tender to shuttle water to the area. A tractor from the Georgia Forestry Commission responded to the scene to cut a fire break, or initial barrier, around the area to help contain the fire, Rutledge said.More like this story
