Pike Nursery will teach pond building at workshop

On Saturday, some customers at Pike Nursery are going to be getting their hands dirty. They'll be taking part in Build-A-Pond Day, a hands-on workshop that covers the basics of constructing a backyard water feature.

"We tell them to bring their shovels, gloves and show up ready to dig," said Chad Carroll, the manager of water gardening for Pike Nursery. He's known at work as the "Waterboy."

Local contractors will be teaching the classes, which will be held at Pike locations throughout metro Atlanta on Saturday. In Gwinnett, Build-A-Pond Day workshops will take place in Suwanee and Lawrenceville.

Those participating will actually be building a pond during the day-long class. "You can get as involved as you want to get," Carroll said. "If you want to learn how to set boulders, we have contractors that will step aside and let you do it."

Backyard ponds are becoming more popular and homeowners throughout metro Atlanta are installing them, Carroll said. "If you get a pond, you can't imagine not having one," Carroll said.

The company began offering the pond-building workshops last year. "We found they were a huge success. The customers loved them," Carroll said.

Though the workshop participants build a pond in one day, the average homeowner will be able to complete the project in about two weekends, Carroll said.

"Putting in a pond isn't easy. It has a lot of steps. We've narrowed it down to about 20 steps," Carroll said.

Once a homeowner has installed a pond, fish can be added to it within a few hours. Developing a functional ecosystem complete with plants, however, takes a bit longer.

"It takes about six to eight weeks to get the ecosystem going," Carroll said.
