LAWRENCEVILLE - A brush fire along Interstate 85 threatened several houses and a business and shutdown portions of the interstate Saturday afternoon.
The Gwinnett County Fire Department responded to the incident at 4:15 p.m. to find a fire along the northbound lanes of I-85 near Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road, according to a Fire Department press release.
Despite the fire being fueled by dry brush and gusty winds, fire crews were able to extinguish flames near the roadway and multiple units were dispatched to protect the buildings near Old Peachtree Road.
None of the buildings were immediate hazards, and fire crews were sent to the houses as a precautionary measure.
There were no reports of structure damage, evacuations or injuries on Saturday, but one lane of I-85 was closed for over two hours because of equipment in the roadway.
The Georgia Forestry Commission cut a fire break around the area to contain the blaze, and Rutledge said there are still going to be some glowing embers in the area.
The press release said the cause of the fire had not yet been determined.
