Nichols case shows fault of Indigent Defense Fund

William Gladstone, British prime minister in the late 1800s, said, "Justice delayed is justice denied." He could have been talking about the American judicial system today. More specifically, he could have been talking about the Brian Nichols case.

Local heroes receive awards

NORCROSS - Last April when a car crashed into a tractor-trailer, pinning the driver in his burning car, Bobby Johnson, a Duluth police officer, was called to the man's rescue.

Johnson said he comforted and tried to rescue the man before the car was completely covered with flames.

"I can remember him screaming to me, 'Help me, help me,'" Johnson said.

The driver was eventually freed from the car by firefighters, but Johnson stayed with him, riding with the man to Grady Memorial Hospital and remaining there until the man died.

Johnson was honored Friday for his heroism that day as were 16 other police officers and firefighters at the second annual Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce Valor Awards luncheon at the Hilton Atlanta Northeast in Norcross.

Former Berkmar baseball player dies in accident

LAWRENCEVILLE - A graduate of Berkmar High School who played baseball died Wednesday in a motorcycle accident at a motocross track in Walton County, officials said.

•LILBURN - A mother and four children lost their Lilburn home after an early Friday morning fire destroyed it.

Berkeley Lake to put up deer crossing warnings

BERKELEY LAKE - City officials voted Thursday night to purchase and install four deer crossing signs for Berkeley Lake.

Council members differed on where the signs should be placed for maximum benefit.

Mayor Lois Salter said if the signs are placed on Gwinnett County roads, the county would pay for their installation. She suggested the signs be placed at three entrance points to the city.

DULUTH - Rock band Nickelback postponed its scheduled Friday concert at the Arena at Gwinnett Center, but the group is set to make up the concert next week.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife Rita Gail Barrett Lewis. He was a member of the Clarkesville Methodist Church. Mr. Lewis was retired from Genuine Parts Company. Painchaud goal lifts Gladiators to 3-2 win

PENSACOLA, Fla. - Chad Painchaud scored his 21st goal of the season late in the third period to lift the Gwinnett Gladiators past Pensacola 3-2 on Friday night at the Pensacola Civic Center.

The win comes just a couple days after Gwinnett was pounded by Charlotte on the road and sets the table for the weekend. The Gladiators play at home tonight and Sunday against two more division rivals, Columbia and Florida.
