GENERAL

PRESENTMENTS

The Gwinnett Grand Jury, of September, 2006 through March, 2007, received testimony in approximately 1000 criminal cases. These cases were investigated by Gwinnett County and city police departments, and prepared for presentation to the Grand Jury by the Gwinnett County District Attorney's Office. We have acquired new perspective and knowledge of the law as it exists in Georgia and Gwinnett County with a better understanding of the processes used to determine the guilt or innocence of a defendant from the evidence presented, allowing us to make true and just decisions regarding indictments.

BUFORD - A man was displaced from his Buford home Wednesday and was forced to leave his dog, cat and bird behind after a fire broke out at his single-story home.

Gwinnett County Fire Department spokesman, Lt. Thomas Rutledge, said the owner of the home on Ashville Drive woke up to the sound of his smoke detector and the smell of smoke Wednesday morning.

Rutledge said firefighters received calls about 12:14 a.m. from neighbors reporting the blaze.

He said the man was already outside when fire crews arrived at the home and said the man escaped unharmed but was unsure what means the man used to escape.

"Unfortunately the animals did not make it out," Rutledge said.

Deck table with stylish tea setting

Maybe male readers can't relate, but as a little girl, I, like most girls, was a huge fan of tea parties. From sending would-be invitations and setting out stuffed friends to dressing in my lavish costume jewelry, the whole faux gala was a day's worth of entertainment.

The key factor for a truly splendid tea party was, of course, the tea set. Mine was a tiny, plastic, white one. In reality, it was rather blah, but in my overly active imagination, it was a fancy-schmancy arrangement of a kettle, cups and saucers.

Pot plants worth $2M seized from home

LAWRENCEVILLE - Police say three men arrested this week for allegedly growing and selling marijuana had approximately 500 plants and a lab in the basement of a Lawrenceville home.

Gwinnett County Police Department spokesman Darren Moloney said Eduardo Rodriguez, 43, (who was previously identified in a warrant as Eduardo Rodriguez-Ibarra) and Jose Felipe-Bruno, 35, of Hialeah, Fla., along with Jorge Gonzalez-Sanchez, 36, of Cape Coral, Fla., were allegedly growing marijuana at 2350 Friars Gate Drive in Lawrenceville.

After searching the residence, officers found approximately 500 plants, an irrigation system, buckets filled with the growing plants, hydroponic beans and a lighting system for the plants. Moloney said the seizure was part of an ongoing investigation with the Barrow County Sheriffs Office Narcotics Unit, the Hall County Sheriff's Office Multi Agency Narcotics Unit and the Fayette County Sheriff's Office Multi Agency Drug Suppression Task Force.

Meadowcreek eyes upset of Norcross

Teondre Williams would like to forget last year's state tournament game against Norcross. And not just because his Meadowcreek Mustangs fell to the eventual state champs 74-62 in the quarterfinals of the Class AAAAA tournament.

Williams, who is considered one of the top juniors in the country, scored just three points on 1 of 10 shooting in the loss to the Blue Devils. It was the worst game of what was otherwise a sensational sophomore season for Williams.

Act now to control crabgrass in the home lawn

As the weather turns warmer, many homeowners begin to take an interest in the care of their home lawns.

The warm season turf grasses, like bermuda, centipede and zoysia, are beginning to come out of dormancy and greening up. The cool season fescue is actively growing. Here at Gwinnett County Extension, a high percentage of the calls we receive are on lawn care. One of the most frequent questions is about controlling crabgrass, a dreaded weed in the home lawn.

Gwinnett's Vigilante likes being back

After leaving professional hockey for a season to work toward his teaching certification and spend more time with his family, Mike Vigilante returned to the Gwinnett Gladiators this season. It was the fourth time the forward signed to play for head coach Jeff Pyle. Vigilante began his pro career with Pyle's Mobile Mysticks in 2001. When the Gladiators were putting together their first roster, Pyle talked Vigilante into coming here when he was contemplating retirement. He played only 18 games for Gwinnett before being called up to the American Hockey League, but re-signed the following summer and spent all of 2004-05 here.

Vigilante has 20 goals and 30 assists in 55 games this season. The soft-spoken Michigan native took time on Wednesday to talk with staff writer Christine Troyke.

Green is part of a growing trend on the home-cleaning front - using all-natural cleaning products rather than chemical-laden cleansers.
