Gwinnett Tech to offer its first summer camp

LAWRENCEVILLE - Gwinnett Technical College's Early Education Center will be open to day campers for the first time this summer.

The day camp, called Camp Imagination Station, will allow children entering kindergarten through second grade to roam between activities and make new friends in a safe, well-supervised environment, said Becky Olson, the center's director.

Camp sessions will take place in an area that has an open area called the piazza and four classrooms.

"They'll have more freedom to move about and find their own niches," Olson said.

Campers will take a field trip off campus once a week, she said. The camp will also take trips on Gwinnett Tech's campus to see programs such as cosmetology, welding and photography.

Children can attend for any length of time between one day and nine weeks. Camp sessions are from 7 a.m. to 6:15 p.m. Monday to Friday from May 29 to July 27, and the cost is $38 per day or $140 per week.

The 26,000-square-foot D. Scott Hudgens Jr. Early Education Center opened in July. It aims to provide hands-on experience to students studying early childhood education at Gwinnett Tech while serving as a nurturing educational center for children ages 6 weeks to 12 years.

The center's summer camp program will be added to its existing list of offerings, including infant, toddler and before- and after-school care, plus state and private pre-kindergarten and Montessori programs, all following the National Association for the Education of the Young Child accreditation standards, according to a press release from Gwinnett Tech.
