Police seek Grayson man suspected in two bank robberies

LAWRENCEVILLE - Police have obtained warrants for the arrest of a man believed responsible for two bank robberies.

Gwinnett County Police Department spokesman Cpl. Darren Moloney said police are looking for 50-year-old Gary Stephen Gambrell. According to the warrant for Gambrell's arrest, he lives at 1330 Pinehurst Road in Grayson.

Police suspect Gambrell in the robberies of Best Bank at 1227 Rockbridge Road in Stone Mountain on Jan. 11 and a second Best Bank location at 3050 Five Forks Trickum Road in Lilburn on Jan. 31. Both banks are located inside Kroger grocery stores.

"He generally presents a demand note during these bank robberies," Moloney said.

A police report from the Jan. 11 robbery says a man, later identified as Gambrell, entered the bank about 8 p.m. and handed an employee a note demanding money. Police say Gambrell pulled up his shirt to reveal a black handgun tucked into his waistband.

The employee told police he handed over about $2,000 before Gambrell fled the store.

A similar note was used to rob the Lilburn bank on Jan. 31. According to a police report, Gambrell entered the bank shortly before 8 p.m., handing a teller a note written on an envelope telling her to give him all her money or he would shoot.

Gambrell did not appear to be armed, the report said, and took nearly $400 before he fled the bank.

Warrants for Gambrell's arrest were issued Feb. 21 for felony robbery and felony armed robbery.

Moloney said Gambrell was previously incarcerated at the Gwinnett County Detention Center in 2003 and in 2006, both arrests for violation of probation.

He said police have no reason to believe Gambrell has fled the state.

"We believed he is still in Georgia," Moloney said.

Gambrell is described as a white man with brown hair, 5 feet 11 inches tall, and weighing about 200 to 215 pounds. Authorities said he has tattoos of skeletal hands playing cards on his upper left shoulder and back and a woman sitting on a crescent moon on his upper right shoulder.

Moloney said Gambrell is considered armed and dangerous and urges anyone with information about him to call lead investigator S. Millsap at 770-513-5315. Anyone with knowledge of Gambrell's exact location should call 911.
