The 13-and-under South Gwinnett Renegades won the championship at the prestigious Baseball Player's Association Georgia State Championship at Harrison Park in Marietta.
The tournament featured 16 of the top teams in Georgia. The two-time defending Greater Gwinnett Baseball League Champions won their pool and then defeated the Duluth Spartans, Druid Hills Redwings and the highly-ranked East Cobb Longhorns 7-2 for the title. Their season record now stands at 37-6-2 with four tournament titles. The team now qualifies to represent Georgia at the BPA World Series in Cherokee, N.C. They previously received a berth in the USSSA AAA World Series in Battle Creek, Mich. Team members are Clint Carr, Michael Gouge, Parker Graves, Austin Loyd, Brian McGrath, Lucas Sims, Steven Slaughter, Austin Smith, Patrick Smith, Drew Thompson, Nicholas Tompkins and Ryan Woodard. The team is coached by Elliott Thompson, Randy Loyd, Jerry McGrath, Reggie Tompkins, Boyd Smith and Leanne Woodard. BASEBALL Wildcats win Battle at the Beach The Duluth Wildcats won the fourth annual Grand Slam Battle at the Beach last weekend. After losing their opening game 5-3 to Hit-After-Hit from Nashville, the Wildcats defeated Sprayberry Jr. Jackets 5-1. They followed that by beating the Milton Jr. Eagles 7-6, then the Eastside Raiders 4-3, and finished by downing the Piggy Mitchell Baseball of Birmingham 16-8 to advance to the championship game. In the finals, the Wildcats avenged their only loss of the tournament by beating Hit-After-Hit 13-5 for the title. Team members are Blake Birdsong, John Clark, Taylor Fields, Jesse Gordon, Preston Johnson, Tyler McCrary, Alex Raffensperger, Drew Sandberg, Eric Sutor, Jacob Timmie and Mitchell Wedding. The team is coached by John Clark, David Fields, Charles Rappensperger and Wayne Sutor. CHEERLEADING Force Elite complete fantastic season The Force Elite Teal Wave all-star team won three national championships and one grand national championship. Team members are Jessica Rutledge, Maya Marshall, Merritt Tate, Michel'le Hull, Morgan Coker, Mykea Mitchell, Noelle Edwards, Shelby Britt, Shelby Gurrera, Taylor Gillespie, Courtney Lee, Callie Payne, Lanesha Foney, Simone Taylor, Alexis Butler, Noelle Miranda, Kaitlynn Williams and Kayla Basak.
