Hospital to trim 72 jobs

LAWRENCEVILLE - Gwinnett Medical Center officials announced Thursday their decision to make budget cuts, which include laying off 72 hospital employees.

As part of a four-month plan, the hospital is making more than $22 million in cost reductions, affecting both the Lawrenceville and Duluth medical center locations, hospital spokesman Kyle Brogdon said. The layoffs account for less than half the $22 million in cuts.

Medical Center President and CEO Phil Wolfe said the decision to cut back was a way of balancing the hospital's revenues and costs.

"What we do, it's a dynamic process. We do our best in budgeting what we think we need," Wolfe said. "Sometimes revenues proceed our expenses and sometimes our expenses exceed our revenues. It's really trying to balance it all, and we needed to readjust our expenses so we can meet the needs of the community."
