Motorcyclist dies after wreck

LAWRENCEVILLE - A 27-year-old man died Wednesday after he was hit while driving his motorcycle near Gwinnett Place Mall.

The name of the victim, who lives in Duluth, was not released Wednesday by Gwinnett County Police, so his family could be notified.

According to a press release, the man was riding east in his '04 Kawasaki in the left-hand lane on Old Norcross Road. At about 11:12 a.m., the man was hit by a 2000 Acura whose driver was attempting to leave a business complex and turn left onto Old Norcross Road near Davenport Road.

The driver of the Acura, Stephen J. Perez, 19, of Duluth, did not require medical attention, but the motorcyclist was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center, where he later died, the release stated.

Gwinnett Police Cpl. Darren Moloney said charges against Perez are pending, and it is unknown if he was wearing his seat belt. According to the preliminary investigation, police believe the motorcyclist's helmet was not properly secured.

While there is no indication that drugs or alcohol were contributing factors to the crash, the investigation is still under way, Moloney said.
