•LILBURN - A Lilburn couple said someone tried to set their house on fire Friday morning.

According to a police report, the couple heard someone trying to enter their home then heard a large explosion outside.

When the man living at the home on Lancaster Circle went outside to see what was happening and saw a small fire in his front yard and a more flames coming from his roof.

When the Gwinnett County Fire Department arrived firefighters found a beer bottle with gasoline and a rag still on fire on top of the roof.

The report said the family also had a vehicle that was stolen and set on fire on June 3.

John Homer Spivey, Jr., age 89, of Lilburn, died June 22, 2007. Mr. Spivey was an Army veteran of WWII serving with the 80th Infantry division, and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was a Deacon at Moreland Ave. Baptist Church, and was retired building superintendant from the William Oliver Building after 50 years. Homer was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Margaret Smith Spivey, and is survived by son, Mr. and Mrs. John R. Lloyd L. de Latour, CDR USN retired, 87, of Suwanee, GA, died on Saturday, June 23, 2007. He was a son of the late Louis A. and Effie Salinger de Latour of New Orleans, LA. Mr. Latour was born in New Orleans on August 15, 1919. He attended Louisiana State University for 1 year prior to receiving appointment to the U. S. navel Academy, where he graduated in 1941. He was elected Captain of the Annapolis track team and led his team to victory over West Point, running the 440 and 880 yard runs and holding what was then the Academy's record in the 880 yard run. After graduation his first assignment was on the battleship USS Maryland prior to the Pearl Harbor attack. He served on a destroyer and aircraft carrier until entering flight training in 1943. As a Naval Aviator he was with the "Black Cat" Squadron in the Pacific. After the war his assignments included Associate Professor of NROTC at Tulane University in New Orleans and at Georgia Tech in Atlanta. He was also Commanding Officer of Naval Air training at Whiting Field in FL, and to the Barrier Forces Atlantic in Newfoundland. After retirement he was active in Georgia real estate and home building. He is survived by Betty, his wife of 49 years; daughter Diana de Latour of Atlanta, GA; son Lloyd L. de Latour Jr. and his wife Cindy de Latour of Lawrenceville, GA; daughter Yvonne Thomas and her husband Pat, of Zachary LA; grandchildren Caitlin de Latour, Natalie de Latour, and Lloyd de Latour III, and Jeanne Lanclos and her husband Randy of La Fayette, LA; and Kyra Moss and her husband Ryan of Zachary, LA. A funeral was held on Monday, June 25th at Wages & Sons Gwinnett Chapel, 1031 Lawrenceville Hwy, Lawrenceville, GA, with visitation from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. and a service immediately following. LAWRENCEVILLE - Despite Georgia's drought, Gwinnett's fire marshal has signed off on three fireworks shows for the upcoming Independence Day holiday.
