Man shoots himself as deputies attempt to serve a court order

NORCROSS - While Gwinnett County Sheriff's deputies were attempting to serve a probate order at a Norcross home Thursday night, the 44-year-old resident inside killed himself.

Authorities found Louie William Scott in an upstairs bedroom of his 1565 Perkle Road home shortly after 8 p.m. Scott died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Sheriff's Department Spokeswoman Stacey Bourbonnais said.

Bourbonnais said deputies were carrying out an order filed by Scott's family to take the man to a Gwinnett mental hospital for care.

"You can never predict what somebody's going to do," Bourbonnais said of the incident. "We're there by court order so we have to serve it. And those situations are unpredictable."

Bourbonnais said deputies used a key provided by family members to open the door to the home when Scott did not respond to their arrival.

Members of the department's SWAT team were called to assist deputies because they received information Scott had weapons in the home and might resist being served, Bourbonnais said.

When deputies entered the home, they heard a gunshot and immediately backed out of the house. Bourbonnais said that is when SWAT members entered the home and found Scott's body.

Bourbonnais said suicide does not happen often in these type of situations, but it can occur.

"It's rare, but it does happen," Bourbonnais said.
