WINDER - Barrow County third- and fifth-graders scored above the state average in tests third-, fifth- and eighth-grade students must pass before being promoted to the next level.

Georgia's Criterion-Referenced Competency Test requires third-grade students meet or exceed reading standards to be promoted, while both reading and math scores must be considered for fifth and eighth graders.

At the state level, 90 percent of third-graders passed the reading portion of the test, while 92 percent of Barrow County students met or exceeded the standards.

Among fifth-graders across the state, 88 percent passed both math and social studies, while 91 percent of Barrow County students passed both subjects.

Statewide, 88 percent of eighth-grade students passed the reading portion of the test while 89 percent of Barrow County students met or exceeded reading test standards.

The lowest grades for the Barrow County school system were found on the sixth-grade math test where both statewide and in Barrow County 65 percent of students passed the test. Sixth-grade science scores were also low with 65 percent of students passing, compared with 60 percent across the state. Percentages of students passing the science test were consistently the lowest in all grades in both Barrow County results and state-wide.

Students who did not pass the exam must retake it before continuing on to the next grade level.

The tests are given to Georgia students in grades one through eight. Students in each grade take the CRCT in reading, English/language arts and math. Students in grades three through eight take additional tests in science and social studies.
