McOmber wins seat on council

SUWANEE - Summer plans and wet weather may have deterred some from going to the polls Tuesday, but those who did cast their votes made their decision clear.

With an unofficial vote count of 306 to 99, Kevin McOmber won a spot on the Suwanee City Council.

"Getting involved in Suwanee is a real pleasure," McOmber said of his win. "I don't necessarily have a new agenda. I'm just happy to get involved."

CMC of Georgia to leave Winder after 26 years

WINDER - A manufacturing firm will move its custom metal fabrication operations to Toccoa after 26 years in Winder.

Mathew Marty, owner of CMC of Georgia Inc., announced recently the upcoming move should allow the company to more than double its productivity and employee base.

County, cities celebrate pair of new fire stations

DACULA - With the addition of two new fire stations in the county, Gwinnett firefighters say they are better prepared to serve the community.

County commissioners, community members and firefighters gathered at two recently completed fire stations in Dacula and Grayson on Tuesday to celebrate the opening of the two buildings.

"We build these fire stations with the hope we won't have to use them, but we know we will," said Chairman Charles Bannister. "These stations took about $3.75 million to build. Some may say that's a lot of money, but it's not when you think of the purpose it serves."

Multiple vehicle fire in Bethlehem

BETHLEHEM - A fire started by sparks from a cutting torch destroyed four vehicles Monday, according to fire reports.

A man was working on the underside of a car on Harry McCarty Road with the torch Monday afternoon. The sparks from the torch caught the grass in the adjoining field on fire. The grass fire spread to four junk vehicles, which were completely destroyed before Barrow County firefighters could extinguish the blaze. Smoke from the fire caused work to cease for awhile at the nearby Neil's Auto Body Shop.
