Youth Roundup: Georgia Elite wins AAU state championship

This past weekend, the 14-and-under Georgia Elite girls basketball team won its fifth consecutive AAU state title.

In dominating fashion, the Elite went 6-0 for the tournament to improve to 31-1 for the year. With the win, the team enters the national tournament in Virginia as the No. 9 seed.

Team members are Alex Abraham, Katie Carroll, Andraya Carter, Lauren Coleman, Baleigh Coley, Jordi Cook, Ashley Sims, Abby Slocumb, Maggie Smith, KaVonne Towns, Stephanie Wheeler and Annie Wheeler. The team is coached by Tim Ellis, Lynn Carroll and Keith Slocumb.


Nike Elite finish second at state tourney

In its first year of competition, the Georgia Nike Elite Team White 14-and-under girls basketball team finished as runner-up in the AAU state championship tournament.

This qualifies the team to represent Georgia as the No. 2 team in the state at the upcoming AAU national tournament in Salem, Va., in July.

Team members are Emaree Cobb, Brittany Jack, Erica Waters, Clarke Boards, Alex DeMercy, Breanna Overby, Kayla Freeman, Shantydra Arnold, Lena Hardy, Cheryl Wade, Loren Thomas and Enisha Donley. The team is coached by Paul Boards, Dalvin Stephens and Derrick Waters.


Dacula Vipers win state recreation cup

The Dacula Vipers U12 boys won the championship of the State Recreation Cup held May 19-20 in Columbus.

Team members are Brian Barr, Conner Buckley, Omar Campos, Francisco Carrasco, Sebastian Carrion, Joseph Fukartas, Anthony Kerr, Liam Miner, Sean Murphy, Thomas Murphy, Erick Nunez and John Troutman.

The team is coached by Jimmy Carrion.


Four ASG gymnasts compete at nationals

Atlanta School of Gymnastics in Lawrenceville had four girls make nationals, two who reached Level 9 Eastern Nationals and two who advanced to Level 10 Nationals.

The Level 9 Eastern Nationals were held in Kissimmee, Fla., May 11-13. Marie Priest, 11, was the first alternate for Region 8 Junior A competition and medaled on the floor with a 9.425 for 10th place. Priest also scored a 8.95 on vault, 8.30 on bars and 8.95 on beam.

Shannon Escarra, 14, made the Junior D Regional Team and medaled on the beam with a 9.175 for seventh place and floor with a 9.375 for ninth place.

The Level 10 Nationals were held May 19-20 in Mason, Ohio. Nicole Allen, 16, competed in the Junior D age group and Allen scored on the vault (9.50), bars (8.725), beam (9.05) and floor (9.325). Overall she placed 31st.

Naja Johnson, 18, competed in the Senior D age group and scored on the vault (9.325), bars (7.65), beam (9.225) and floor (9.375). Johnson also has received a full gymnastics scholarship to attend West Virginia in the fall.
